When visiting Gjirokaster you’ll soon notice that there are helpful brown signs all over directing you to the most important sights. The first stop is the fortress that can be reached by a staircase that’s a little less arduous than the steep road.
The bazaar was totally rebuilt. That is why the buildings have the same architecture, some 2 and other 3 stores, but very identical from their structure, in all its line. The first floor is the place where artisan worked all the day, and the second floor was used for different purpose in each of them.
The Old Bazaar in Gjirokastra, called by locals as “Qafa e Pazarit” makes up the centre of the Old Town. The history of Bazaar dates back in 17th century. In fact there is no much left from that period. The sources says that a destroying fire impacted the old bazaar in 3d quarter of 19th century.
Overlooking the whole town, after entering the fortress’ gate, a large stone hall with an array of military artillery greets visitors. If the hall has peaked your interest you can enter the museum and see more memorabilia from the Communist resistance against the German occupation.
The Castle of Tepelene, was proclaimed Cultural Monument of first category in 1963 and is situated in the North of the city of Tepelene, Municipality of Tepelene. According to historical resources, the castle was envisioned from Ali Pasha Tepelena itself, who had supervised the first stage.
